Here's one for everyone left frustrated by lead generation campaigns that aren't converting.  

We get it, there is more competition out there than ever before and to survive we need to keep selling.  Despite what the new guys will tell you, email isn't dead (whilst we still use email to sign into every site and application we use, it remains the primary way to connect),  but traditional cold outreach methods, like generic emails, are no longer enough to capture attention, let alone convert prospects into paying customers. With response rates to cold emails averaging below 1%, everyone is out there looking for a smarter, more strategic approach to drive engagement and close more deals.

Through our experience working with various clients, we've seen a wide range of lead generation strategies, each yielding different levels of success. Having looked back at what worked (and what could have been improved), we’ve identified some of the key tactics that consistently drive meaningful engagement with prospects and lead to consistent conversion rates.

Step 1: Timing

Engage at the right time and the right place 

Timing is everything in sales, but where you talk to your prospects is also really important to consider. If you’re reaching out to a prospect when they are not actively looking for a solution, your message is likely to get ignored.  If you approach them out of context to where they are looking, it's even harder! 

When we focus on understanding buying triggers—events or conditions that indicate a potential customer is ready to engage, we found that it's aligned to where they are looking.  Are they engaged on LinkedIn with a topic, are they running an event or publishing a blog on their website? 

🔹 Can you identify key moments when a prospect is in the consideration phase of their buying journey.
🔹 Leverage LinkedIn engagement, job changes, and industry news as signals to time your outreach.
🔹 Use automation and AI-driven insights to reach out where your prospects are more likely to respond to gain immediate traction.

Step 2: Build a Winning Lead Generation Strategy

A strong lead generation strategy goes beyond sending messages—it’s about building a process that nurtures relationships and increases conversion rates.

🔹 Create a roadmap of campaigns to guide prospects through the funnel.
🔹 Develop personalised messaging tailored to each recipient’s needs and challenges.
🔹 Measure and refine your strategy using data-driven insights to scale success.

Step 3: Engage Effectively—Ditch Generic Cold Emails

If you’re still relying on cold emails with little to no personalisation, you’re missing out on high-quality leads. Personalised outreach is the key to higher response rates and better conversions.

What doesn’t work: Generic emails like "I saw you [taking action] and thought we could connect..."

What works: BE CONSISTENT.  Get started. Keep sending. Keep posting.  Apart from not actually starting, many campaigns fail because people give up to soon and move on to a new strategy.
